LEFT-HANDERS EDUCATION FORUM AND TRAINING INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

The Centre for Education Rights and Transformation, at the Faculty of Education at University of Johannesburg, at the African Left-Handers Foundation held the Harmony of Hands Indaba to celebrate left-handedness and to explore how the education curriculum and teacher training can support left-handed learners.

The Indaba was held on Tuesday 17th September 2024 and was very well supported both locally and internationally.

This creative program of music, expression, sharing and learning was the result of a wonderful collaboration with Professor Eugene  Skeef, of the University of Johannesburg.

The keynote speaker was Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka, South Africa’s Public Protector, who expressed a great understanding of the issues and showed great empathy towards left-handed learners and the need to remove the stigmatisation that currently exists.

The Dean of Education at University of Johannesburg, Professor Nadine Petersen, has committed to provide greater understanding and knowledge  in teacher training courses at the University.

Guest speakers from Australia, India, the UK and South Africa contributed greatly to the discussion.
